What you’ll need
Shopping list, calculator (optional), mobile phone camera (optional for recording purposes)
How to try this at home
- Before starting the shopping, create a simple shopping list with your child. Include items with different prices.
- As you shop, ask your child to pick two of their favorite items and calculate the total cost by adding the prices.
- If there are discounts or offers, ask your child to calculate how much money you'll save.
- Encourage them to keep track of the total spending and remaining budget using mental math or a calculator, reinforcing their number sense and understanding of addition and subtraction.
- Discuss the results together and encourage them to think about different strategies they used to solve the problems.
Reflection and discussion
- Did we spend more than what you thought we would?
- How is subtracting different to adding?
- If an item is more expensive than expected, how much do we need to reduce spending by to remain in budget?
Learning objectives
- Practice addition and subtraction in real-world contexts.
- Enhance mental math strategies using everyday items.
- Develop confidence in handling money transactions using simple calculations.
Curriculum descriptors
- AC9M2N04 add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers, representing problems using number sentences, and solve using part-part-whole reasoning and a variety of calculation strategies
- AC9M2N06 use mathematical modelling to solve practical problems involving additive and multiplicative situations, including money transactions; represent situations and choose calculation strategies; interpret and communicate solutions in terms of the situation
