Engage in a simple two-player strategy game to develop foresight and planning skills.

What you’ll need

A chessboard or a checkerboard and pieces for each player.

How to try this at home

  1. 1. Set up a simple strategy game such as checkers or chess with your child. Explain the basic rules and objectives of the game.
  2. 2. Encourage your child to think about their move and the possible responses from the opponent. Ask them to vocalize their thought process as they make decisions.
  3. 3. After each move, discuss what potential responses the opponent can make and how that could affect the next few moves.
  4. 4. Introduce the idea of 'planning ahead' by thinking about not just the current move but the next two or three moves ahead.
  5. 5. Occasionally pause the game to reflect on the decision-making process. Ask questions like "What would happen if you moved there? How might your opponent respond?"
